Join us for a week's Botanical Illustration course to experience the inspirational painting opportunities this beautiful island has to offer.
Your tutor for the week will be Anne Urquhart (MARCA) who lives and works in Crete after many years teaching in Art colleges and Universities in London.
The course will involve painting trips to various locations to discover the hidden floral life of Crete. There will be trips to the beaches, countryside and to Botanical Gardens all of which will provide a wealth of unusual and amazing plant life from which to paint.
Demonstrations, discussion groups and tutorials will also feature, as part of the course and group lunches will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas in an informal setting.
The course is suitable for all levels of competence from the absolute beginner to the more experienced artist and all the materials necessary for the course will be provided.
Meet the Artist
Anne has been living in Crete since 2005 after many years working and exhibiting in London as a professional artist and lecturer. In addition to her teaching work at the Univeristy of the Arts London, she taught on adult education courses teaching both complete beginners and gifted amateurs alike. She will provide the practical and theoretical information necessary to ensure the success of your painting holiday.
Here in Crete, Anne holds weekly adult painting and drawing classes which take inspiration from the rich and varied Cretan landscapes and seascapes allowing the students the opportunity to paint in the sunshine. She also works part time at MBS College in Heraklion which is part of Nottingham Trent University UK as Programme Leader for Art & Design.
If you are interested in DRAWING or WATERCOLOUR PAINTING and also in the flora of Crete, this course will provide the time and opportunity to study the indigenous plant life in a range of locations under the tutelage of a trained professional who will help and guide you in recording your discoveries.

Flowers & Plants - Watercolour Painting Holiday 21st to 28th May: Typical Itinerary
There will be a short introduction to each day's painting with handouts and helpful hints regarding the particular assignment.
Day 1 - Wednesday
The day will begin with an introductory talk and demonstrations of various painting and drawing techniques. After undertaking a series of exercises, studies will be produced of the Mistral Hotel gardens and garden architecture. There will be coffee and biscuits provided during the session.
Day 2 - Thursday
This will involve a short stroll along a beach where the morning will be spent discovering and identifying the flowers and plants which grow on the beach and at the shoreline. These discoveries will be recorded by means of a range of drawing techniques using pencils.
Day 3 - Friday
A picturesque village will provide the inspiration for the morning's art work. After investigations within a relatively small area of land, the amazing specimens to be found there will be illustrated using watercolour painting techniques. Then follows a group lunch in the local taverna where there will be ample opportunity for discussion regarding the work produced and the progress made.
Day 4 - Saturday
This will be devoted to investigating the research work which is undertaken at the Botanical Park situated within the mountains close to Chania. The rough and rugged terrain is the ideal home for indigenous endangered plant species which are nurtured and protected by the organisation. A tour of the park will provide opportunity to record the flora. The morning will be devoted to rendering in pen, ink and light washes followed by a group lunch in the centre where you can taste the locally produced organic food.
Day 5 - Sunday
A day of rest!
Day 6 - Monday
A short lesson in regard to details within the plants and how to represent this compositionally. The techniques you have learned during the course will be used appropriately and the location will be the nearby Maleme promenade with its range of potted plants and bushes. Lunch will be provided by the Mistral and there will be a pre-dinner exhibition for all the hotel guests to enjoy.
