THOSE SUMMER NI-YIGHTS (TELL ME MORE, TELL ME MORE)

Is high season in Crete too hot to handle?

We don’t think so – here’s why.

THOSE SUMMER NI-YIGHTS (TELL ME MORE, TELL ME MORE)

It’s been 46 years since Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson exploded onto our screens in Grease extolling the wonders of long hot summer nights. They probably got together happily for a few years and had kids but hey, you know how life goes – they ended up separating. Danny now plays golf with his T-Bird buddies whilst Sandy holidays as a single with Frenchy and the Pink Ladies. In fact they generally book for the Mistral for the first two weeks of August – they love the long hot summer nights.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE? JUST HOW HOT IS CRETE IN HIGH SUMMER?

A lot of people think that Crete is too hot to handle in high summer. Actually that’s a misnomer. As the following chart shows, the daytime highs in July and August are only on average 1° higher than in June (traditionally our most popular month for visitors) and 2° higher than in September.

It’s great for warming the pool but worth remembering from your fifth form Geography that, as we’re on the coast, we often have nice cooling onshore breezes by day. Perhaps the best thing of all is that every evening it’s easily warm enough that we can dine al fresco with no need at all to wear a second layer as the floor that has been sun-baked during the day releases its heat.

THE MISTRAL IS COOL – AND THEN SOME

It goes without saying that the Mistral is ‘super-cool’ – certainly we think our guests are. But, in addition, the air-conditioning in the bedrooms gives the whole a ‘chill-out’ feel. All in all manging your body temperature is a simple matter of alternating plunges in one of the pools with a cold drink or two over lunch and planning in an ice-cream before the cocktail hour. Perhaps one final swim to make sure the shoulders stay cool in the sun.

DANCING IN THE DARK

After dinner there is every risk that things might start hotting up again as spin-maester Agis hits the wheels of steel (well, his pre-programmed list of foot-tapping classics – OMG that man has great taste in playlists) and people drift to the Mistral Mosh-Pit and the boogieing begins as guests dance like there’s nobody watching.
Ah yes, another day in paradise, another cool night in heaven. What’s not to love?
