WELLBEING AND THE LEGEND OF ASCLEPIUS

Good health was a particular fascination of ancient Greeks, who took a very holistic view of wellbeing. In Greek legend the responsibility for this was given to Asclepius, God of Health, a son of Apollo, who actually dates back to the bronze age and Phoenician times. Like most immortals Asclepius had a prodigious number of children, including a tribe of daughters many of whom lend their names to various aspects of medicine and healing.

Hygeia, from whom we get the word ‘hygiene’ was the overall Goddess of health. Panacea was the Goddess of Universal Remedies. Taken together, those who helped Asclepius tend to the ill and the infirm were known as ‘The Therapeutae‘. Places of healing were known as ‘Asklepion’s’ (sic) and there are many famous examples, in particular the one at Epidaurus on the Peloponnese. Excavations on the southern coast of Crete at Lentas suggest an Asklepion located around some springs. In total around 100 therapeutic ‘sacred’ springs are known on Crete.

THE ALTHEA WELLNESS SUITE AT THE MISTRAL – OUR MINI ASKLEPION

In Greek the name Althea means ‘healer’ – the word Thea in its own right means Goddess. As such, when we were deciding what to call the wellness suite at the Mistral Althea was the obvious choice. In many ways we see the Mistral as something of a holistic Asklepion, a place where people come and stay to revive and recuperate from the pressures and stresses of the humdrum world. The ancients very much saw good food, good company, good conversation, and laughter as important parts of wellbeing. You’ll find that 24/7 at the hotel. Whilst at the Althea Wellness Suite, located in the rear courtyard, offering a range of treatments for relaxation, health, and beauty, you’ll find a haven for individual attention.
